About Us

The Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA) was launched as an independent body on 16 March 1991 in Melbourne. CESAA was based on the experience of the national Associations for Contemporary European Studies in each of the member states of the European Union and elsewhere, CESAA aims to:

  • Promote teaching and research in contemporary European studies;

  • Provide a forum for discussion of contemporary European issues;

  • Publish work of high quality in European Studies

  • Maintain and foster links between tertiary education institutions

  • Foster links among academics in Australia and internationally

  • Encourage European studies in secondary schools

  • Advise interested government and non-governmental organisations.

  • The establishment of CESAA reflects a desire that academics in Australia from all tertiary institutions, as well as interested individuals, participate in the activities of one association in Australia. The approach of CESAA is interdisciplinary and inter-professional. CESAA is an active member of the worldwide network of the European Community Studies Association (ECSA), based in Brussels. CESAA was also a founding member of the Asia Pacific Network of the European Community Studies Associations (ECSAs). Like other ECSA’s around the world, CESAA is predominantly funded by the European Union.
